bet365 founder awarded CBE in Queen's New Year Honours

Saturday, December 31, 2011

THE founder of Potteries-based online gaming firm bet365 has been named on the Queen's New Year Honours list.

Denise Coates, daughter of Stoke City chairman Peter Coates, will be made a CBE for services to the community and business.

She is one of several Staffordshire and Cheshire residents who will be honoured by the Queen in the New Year.

Denise started bet365 in a portable building in a car park in 2000, but since then it has grown into Stoke-on-Trent's biggest private sector employer, providing work for 900 people in the city.

The company, based in Festival Park, also owns Stoke City, with much of the club's recent success flowing from a £50 million investment.

Denise, who lives in Betchton, near Sandbach, said: "It's an incredible honour to receive this award. It would not have been possible without the fantastic support and commitment of everybody at bet365."

Dad Peter, who provided financial support for the launch of bet365, said: "We are all delighted and all proud of her.

"She has done an absolutely amazing job for bet365, building it up from scratch.

"And obviously the money the football club gets comes through the success of bet365, so she has played a key role in the success of the football club."

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis said: "Everyone associated with Stoke City is indebted to Denise and delighted at this fully deserved honour."

Former Staffordshire Police chief superintendent Mick Harrison will also be honoured by the Queen.

The 50-year-old, who left the force in April to become Staffordshire County Council's commissioner of community safety, will receive an MBE for services to the police.

Mick, from Baldwins Gate, served in various roles over a 33-year career with the police, including stints as a detective in Longton and Stafford before becoming superintendent at Hanley and then chief superintendent for Trent Valley.

He said: "I was absolutely thrilled to learn I was going to receive an MBE, but also humbled at the same time. I know I'm very fortunate to receive this honour.

"I was with Staffordshire Police as man and boy, from when I joined as a cadet at 17. After I retired earlier this year I did miss it a lot, but now I'm really pleased to be working for the county council."

Ann Salih, below, will receive an MBE for her work as committee member and chairman of Norton Residents' Association over the last 22 years.

The 60-year-old, of Peascroft Road, Norton, said: "I got the letter about the MBE on the day before my 60th birthday, and so I thought someone was just playing a joke on me.

"But when I found out it was real I was just completely overwhelmed. I'm accepting this award on behalf of the whole residents' association, because everyone works very hard for Norton." Ann's husband, former councillor Mick Salih, said: "I'm really proud of Ann and everyone else at the residents' association."

David Emery, chairman of the Uttoxeter branch of the Royal Naval Association, will also receive an MBE for his work with the branch.

The 76-year-old, of Blythe Bridge, said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to bits to receive this award. I'm just sorry that my mother and father aren't around to see this. My mother was very much involved in charity work, and so she would be very pleased."
