'The Professor' takes home a record winner's purse

The 2008 Aussie Millions continues to produce exciting poker and big prizes at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, this week producing the second highest ever winner's prize. The star-studded turnout and major money has heightened anticipation that this year's Main Event will be one to remember.

Howard "The Professor" Lederer pocketed a cheque for $1.25 million after beating Mark Teltscher in an exciting heads up to Event 9 - a $100,000 No Limit Hold 'Em contest - that left the latter with the runner-up prize of $650 000.

25 top players entered the competition, taking up three tables that included names like Erick Lindgren, 2007 Aussie Millions Main Event winner Gus Hansen, multiple WSOP bracelet holders Phil Ivey and Erik Seidel, flamboyant poker pro Tony G, Howard Lederer, 2000 World Champion Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson and Masaaki Kagawa.

Among online qualified stars were Michael 'Timex' McDonald, Tom 'durrr' Dwan and Jeff 'ActionJeff' Garza, altogether creating a $2.5 million prize-pool that made available a first prize that was the second highest in Aussie Millions history.

Disappointingly, Gus Hansen was among the early eliminations in an initially cautious contest as the high stakes players felt their opponents out. Hansen fell to some smart play by Erick Lundgren, who went on to remove TonyG from contention, too.

The final table trimmed down to Erick Lundgren as chip leader on 574 000 Jeff Garza (496 000) Nikolaus Jedlicka (446 000) Tom Dwan (299 000) Howard Lederer (202 000) Jeff Lisandro (192 000) Mark Teltscher (171 000) and Michael Sampoerna (125 000)

The Internet players were the first two eliminations, with Dwan falling to fellow online player Garza, who was in turn bundled out by Teltscher. After starting strongly, Lindgren fell to Sampoerna, leaving the remaining five players in the money bubble, with the number five slot paying out $100 000 and that tantalising $1.25 winner's prize up for grabs.

Jedlicka went out at number 5, collecting the $100 000 after being sent to the exit by Sampoerna. Teltscher took out the next two players to go - Lisandro on $150 000 for a fourth placing and Sampoerna at third with $350 000, thus setting the scene for a heads up between Lederer and Teltscher, the latter with the chip lead.

In under an hour it was all over, with Teltscher headed to the rail and a second place win of $650 000 and "The Professor" earning $1.25 million for his master class in tournament poker.

Poker : Aussie Millions Main Event Starts

Tuesday, January 15, 2008 mgowanbo.cc

Big names aplenty in antipodean adventure

After ten preceding competitions over the past week, each with an abundance of action and big money (Howard Lederer walked away with a $1.25 million winner's prize in event 9) the Main Event at the 2008 Aussie Millions commenced with the traditional "shuffle up and deal call" on Monday.

The 215 player entry field for Day 1 A of the event at Melbourne's Crown Casino looked like a roll call of global poker aces, and included Gavin Smith, John Juanda, Karina Jett, Eli Elezra, Jimmy 'gobboboy' Fricke, Allen Cunningham, Raymond Rahme, Lee Watkinson and Tony G, making for highly competitive tables. Gavin Smith's starting table, for example saw  Brandon Schaefer, Dag Martin Mikkelsen, David Grey and John Juanda all facing each other across the felt.

Andy Black seemed to be on a roll, building a formidable chip stack and eliminating at least six opponents in early play, and more later. He ended the day as chip leader on 167 800, significantly ahead of nearest rival Shane Moran (who has 122 200) at the head of a survivor list of 91 players. That list of players who will continue to play in the Main Event included 2007 WSOP finalist Raymond Rahme, Nikolaus Jedlicka, Internet ace Thomas 'durrr' Dwan, Erik Seidel, Thomas Bihl, Allen Cunningham, Tony G and JJ Liu.

Once again, there was a liberal sprinkling of star-power in the field with Anna Wroblewski, 2007 WSOPE Main Event winner and Betfair ambassadress Annette 'Annette_15' Obrestad, Howard Lederer, Chip Jett and Mike 'The Mouth' Matusow joined by actor Michael Vartan and cricket legend Shane Warne, who has signed up as a pro with 888.com recently.

338 Aussie Millions Survivors Start Day 2

Friday, January 18, 2008 mgowanbo.cc

But only 98 remain at day's end....

Day 2 of the Aussie Millions saw a field of 338 survivors from the three Day 1 heats gather at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, all hoping to reach the next level in the competition....by day's end only 98 remained.

On the highly competitive tables 2007 third-place finisher Andy Black started Day 2 with a slight chip lead over American ace Phil Ivey. Still in there with a good chance was 2005 WSOP champ Joe Hachem, who also started with a big stack from his Day 1 success. Clonie Gowen, Tony G, Mike 'The Mouth' Matusow, Kenna James, Raymond Rahme and Terrence Chan were all ready to go, along with JJ Liu, Ari 'BodogAri' Engel and Graeme 'Kiwi G' Putt.

Most of them - including home-boy Joe Hachem and Clonie, were to head for the rail in the early stages of play. Howard Lederer's million dollar luck ran out when Raymond Rahme outflopped him with A-9 to Lederer's A-K, and fellow Full Tilt Team member John Juanda suffered the same fate when he ran pocket fives into Kofi Farye's pocket tens and failed to improve.

Phil Ivey was shown the exit door by Richard Teatum, following a stream of top name eliminations that included Michael Binger, cricket star Shane Warne, Jon 'Pearljammer' Turner, Tony G and Allen Cunningham.

The day ended with 98 players still in the hunt - just short of the 80-player 'money bubble' mark, and Matthew LaGarde holding a substantial chip lead at 490 000 - way ahead of other survivors like Andy Black and Mike 'The Mouth' Matusow. Other notable survivors of Day 2 included Kenna James, Erick Lindgren, Max Pescatori and Jeff Lisandro.

Aussie Millions Poker - 22 Survivors

Saturday, January 19, 2008 mgowanbo.cc

Remaining players can almost taste that $1.65 million winner's prize.

Day 3 of the Aussie Millions Main Event has ended with 22 survivors moving to the next level and a chance at the $1.65 million winner's prize and other paydays as the money bubble was reached with the 80th elimination at the Crown Casino in Melbourne.

The 98 players from Day 2 started the day with Matthew LaGarde heading the chip counts, and some formidable opponents intent on reaching the final table. Internet stars Tom 'durrr' Dwan and Kevin 'BeLOWaBOVe' Saul, together with pros like Mike Matusow, Jeff Lisandro, Erik Seidel, Kenna James, Erick Lindgren and Andy Black were all still in contention.

Matusow and Lisandro were early casualties, busted out before the money bubble was breached, and once this had occurred the pace picked up with several more big name exits including the two Internet stars and Erik Lindgren, Perry Friedman and Matt Matros.

When the field had been reduced to 36 players, the tables were redrawn to six-handed format, with Andy Black heading for the rail in 34th place following a clash with Erik Seidel and Matthew LaGarde bundled out by Peter Ling in 26th place, at least drawing a decent $40 000 payout.

The organisers called it a night when the field was down to 22 players with the popular local player Antonio Casale firmly in the lead with 1 513 000 in chips - well ahead of Nico Behling on 1 306 000.

Kostritsyn Aussie Million's Poker Champ

Monday, January 21, 2008 mgowanbo.cc

$1.65 payday for beating 780 poker players

The Aussie Millions Main Event culminated in an exciting two hour heads up contest over the weekend, with Alexander Kostritsyn taking home the title and a cheque for  $1 650 000, beating veteran and multiple WSOP bracelet Erik Seidel who enjoyed a million dollar payday for his second placing.

The two men were part of a group of 22 players who survived a gruelling 5 days of poker action at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, against a Main Event entry field of 780 players, many of them international stars in their own right. The 22 player field was narrowed down to seven players who went forward on Saturday to a final table.

Facing off across the baise were chip leader Michael Chrisanthopoulos in a strong position with 6 806 000 in chips against nearest rival and local player Antonio Casale (1 995 000) Other final tablers were Nino Marotta (1 649 000) Erik Seidel (1 491 000) Alexander Kostritsyn (1 439 000) Peter Mobbs (1 357 000) and Peter Ling (877 000)

Aggressive play from Mobbs almost immediately kicked the game into high gear, but he came short when he lost an exchange with Kostritsyn and found himself on the way to the rail and a $225 000 seventh place payout. To the disappointment of some partisan Aussie spectators, local player Antonio Casale was next to go - another victim of Kostritsyn, playing cool and calculating poker. Casale's consolation was the sixth place purse of $300 000.

Kostritsyn was by now in the chip lead, and a few hands later faced up to a challenge from a determined Nino Marotta, winning it to consolidate his position by taking his third opponent at the final table down. Marotta headed for the cashier and a fifth placing pay cheque of $400 000.

Play settled down and it was another two hours before things warmed up again with Ling and Chrisanthopoulos going at it in an aggressive and skilful display of card playing that culminated in Ling leaving the table to collect his fourth place payout of $500 000.

Now three handed, the originally overwhelming chip leader Chrisanthopoulos was the next to fall when he crossed cards with Kostritsyn. Erik Seidel started a move and then folded, leaving Kostritsyn and Chrisanthopoulos to fight it out. Chrisanthopoulos was the loser, eliminated in third place and taking home $700 000. As the last Australian in the game, it meant that once again the Aussie Millions trophy would leave the antipodean shores.

Entering the heads up, Kostritsyn held a strong lead of 9 925 000 against Seidel's 5 685 000 - the American ace had quietly built up his chip lead without directly eliminating anyone and it took another two hours of tough, expert poker to decide the winner.

In the end it was the young Russian who prevailed, taking his first Aussie Millions trophy and that major $1.65 million winner's cheque. Seidel takes a bank booster of a million dollars back to the States as his reward for second place.

U.S. "Aussie Millions" Player Robbed

Monday, January 21, 2008 mgowanbo.cc

$30 000 taken at knifepoint

It was a disappointing end to a great competition for 22 year old Oklahoma player Jason Potter this week when the young poker pro was robbed at knifepoint of his winnings.

Potter had cashed in his Aussie Millions poker tournament cheque for $30 000 and was walking back to his hotel in the early hours of the morning from the Crown Casino in Melbourne when the robbery occurred. Potter was threatened with a knife-wielding man whom police are seeking to identify through CCTV footage.

Potter said that the experience would not deter him from again playing in the competition.

Robbers Of Aussie Millions Player Arrested

Saturday, February 02, 2008 mgowanbo.cc

Melbourne police waste no time in catching Potter assailants

The report on the assault and robbery against Aussie Millions poker player Jason Potter recently had a sequel this week when Melbourne police announced the apprehension of two men allegedly responsible for the crime.

Dwayne Johnstone (32) is facing five charges including armed robbery, assault and drug possession. Vhyharn Arumughasamy (26) is being charged with one count of armed robbery.

The duo did not apply for bail, and Magistrate Sarah Dawes ordered them to trial in the Melbourne Magistrates Court in March.

22 year old Jason Potter was subjected to a violent and unprovoked attack as he was walking back to his hotel after cashing in his chips at the Crown Casino on January 21. The young Oklahoma player had placed 31st in a field of 780 players in the Aussie Millions Poker Championship to earn more than $31 000. He was carrying that money in American and Australian banknotes when he was robbed.

According to the Victoria Herald Sun, Jason was hit from behind while walking on Spencer Street Bridge in Melbourne at 4:30 a.m. His attackers were armed with knives and grabbed the money from his front sweatshirt pocket.

Melbourne detectives executed two search warrants on Thursday in connection with the case and arrested Johnstone and Arumughasamy on the following day.
