China announces anti-gambling plans ahead of the Asian Cup finals in July

Earlier in May, the Chinese police arrested 37 people who operated an online gambling syndicate which placed over $500 million in bets over the last two years.
Thailand and Indonesia, which co-host the Asian Cup together with Malaysia and Vietnam, have no specific plans to prevent illegal betting on the Asian soccer tournament. According to police officials in Thailand, there will not be any big illegal betting on the Asian Cup. "Thais are fond of the English Premier League, Italy’s Serie A or even the Spanish La Liga rather than Asian football. They know players and figures of those teams, rather than teams of this tournament," a spokesperson for the Bangkok metropolitan police told the AFP.
Meanwhile, Taiwan is due to decide within September whether to legalize sports gambling to stimulate economic development in the country. |
