Investors seem to like the GB 51 million deal

Sportech investors appeared to be in tune with the company's acquisition of rival Vernons Pools this week, driving up the share price by a solid 10 percent when the deal was disclosed.

Pools operator Sportech agreed to a total acquisition cost of GBP 51 million in the deal with Vernons parent Ladbrokes. The gaming firm said that it would pay GBP 45 million upfront, followed by two annual instalments of GBP 3 million.

Ladbrokes Doubles Profits

Published: Thursday, November 15, 2007 https://www.gowanbo.cc

But it's mainly due to volatile high roller activity

The last four months have been kind to UK betting powerhouse Ladbrokes - profits have nearly doubled, boosted by significant losses by "high roller" telephone gamblers, who once again pushed up the betting house's results as telephone betting revenues reached GBP 91.8 million.

It was just as well, because the high roller contribution helped offset weak performances from Ladbroke's high street shops, where stakes placed on horse racing were hit by wet summer weather cancellations and results that went against the bookie assessments and squeezed margins.

In one week alone over August-September leading Premiership teams all won domestic and European fixtures, nailing the bookmaker for GBP 15 million in payouts.

Despite this, profits soared by 84 percent in the four months to October 31. However, after stripping out high rollers and the one-off cost of a GBP 3.7 million TV advertising campaign, profit stats fell 12 percent.

Online gaming net revenue grew 5 percent, customer sign ups rose 21 percent and unique active customers grew by 11 percent.

The head of eGaming at the group, John O’Reilly, said "We are focusing efforts on our online poker platform, with the launch of a 3D poker interface available to players on our 2D network in the near future.”

The Times reports that fears that Ladbrokes is reliant on notoriously volatile high-stakes telephone bets drove the company's shares down 9p to 370.50p in early trading.

Finance director Brian Wallace also admitted that Ladbrokes could stand to lose millions if England and Scotland fail to qualify for the European Championships ahead of this Saturday's crunch games.

Telephone betters, who are mainly high-value gamblers, brought in GBP 918 million in the four-month period. The first half of the year to June 30, saw revenue from high rollers soar to GBP 95.5 million from GBP 13.3 million.

Ladbrokes' over-the-counter gross win - its turnover after payouts to successful punters - fell 5 percent, as the exodus to the telephone and the internet continued. However, there was an upturn in high street winnings in September and October following winter evening opening.

In Spain, the group is busy fitting out betting shops in the Madrid area in anticipation of winning a regional license. It has also acquired 17 shops in Italy. Ladbrokes owns 2 135 betting shops in the UK.

CEO Christopher Bell commented that early trading this (November) month has seen a continuation of high roller telephone activity, which reached into double digit year on year growth in UK retail gross win.

He added: "Ladbrokes remains focused on growing its established businesses whilst developing the new opportunities in Italy and Spain."

3D Online Poker Launching Soon At Ladbrokes

Published: Friday, November 16, 2007 https://www.gowanbo.cc

Video gaming and online poker technology merges in new offering

Online poker players at Ladbrokes will soon experience for themselves the latest in Internet poker technology as the website gears up for the launch of the company's latest 3D virtual reality poker this week.

The new service integrates cutting edge video gaming software with its existing poker service and means that all Ladbrokespoker customers will have the option of creating a custom 3-D 'Avatar' with physical characteristics. In the poker game the 3-D avatar will display the same human-like movements that have been developed for state of the art video games.

MD of Ladbrokes eGaming John O'Reilly comments: "This is a major step in the convergence of video gaming technology and online gaming and we're pleased to be the first leading poker site to go 'virtual'"

Ladbrokes customers can still play on any table, but they will have the option of playing in 3-D should they choose to. The service further enhances the online poker experience by enabling players to talk to each other using VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) as well as existing text chat.

The new Ladbrokes site has been developed in conjunction with Playwize plc, a UK developer of video games for consoles such as XBOX, PS2 and Nintendo GameCube. Players have the opportunity to develop their skills by using interactive tutorials and by playing in practice mode with advice and tips from online poker experts.

O'Reilly says that the key priority has been to ensure the 3-D virtual software integrates effectively with the existing poker site to ensure the best possible delivery for new 3D players. "This means 3-D players will have access to all the same tournaments and cash games as existing players", he said.

Two years back, visitors to the International Casino Exhibition in London were amazed and intrigued by the sheer quality of an online gaming software product from Gextech which enabled operators to set up international virtual football matches in a variety of the worlds top stadiums. Players, their strips and even the environmental ambience could be customised, and dynamic camera views captured the look and feel of top football contests.

This week Gextech announced that this impressive product will be available on Ladbrokes Internet websites in the near future. Finns Tightening Up On Online Gambling?

Wednesday, January 16, 2008 mgowanbo.cc

Some radical ideas on reimbursing problem gamblers

It must have something to do with those long winters up North, but Finnish players have, along with other Scandinavians, developed a solid reputation as Internet gamblers of note in terms of both volume and skills. The Finnish government has not been slow to notice the popularity of the pastime either, and that heralds a tightening up on sensitive issues such as underage and problem gambling.

Now a working group at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health is proposing that the all-embracing Lotteries Act is beefed up to ensure that teens under 18 years of age are completely prohibited from playing slot machines, lotto and Toto, reports YLE and Helsingin Sanomat. The group also suggests that gambling games be equipped with identification devices to help ensure that age restrictions are obeyed, and that "evocative gambling advertisements" are barred.

The proposed amendment to the Lotteries Act is motivated by a push to prevent the harmful effects of gambling. Surprisingly, 15 year-olds can play slot machines and buy coupon games over the counter.

Where online gambling is concerned, additional measures are being proposed that include interfering with telecommunications - presumably through the ISP infrastructure - and restrictions on international online financial transactions. And a law professor at Joensuu University, Kalle Määttä is making waves with a controversial academic paper based on the precept that losers who have played on "illegal online games" should be empowered to recoup their losses.

Apparently Professor Määttä's paper, which was commissioned by the Finnish government, suggests that players authorised to recoup their losses could be paid either by the firm providing the online gambling services, any credit card company whose card was used, or even the winning player in the game! The goal of the authorities appears to be to make Finnish players so troublesome that online gambling venues would bar them from participating.

According to Määttä, a Finnish law consisting of such concepts would be pioneering legislation unmatched by anything elsewhere in the world. The professor claims that the idea of the law is not to force citizens to put shackles on their gambling, but merely to provide them with the opportunity to claim back the losses that they may have accumulated, say, while playing online poker when drunk.

The Ministry is aware of the technical difficulties such a law would involve, and is therefore waiting to hear comments on the proposals and the practicalities of their implementation.

Helsingin Sanomat reports that the online poker operation is based on the same kind of pyramid system used in network sales businesses. According to the social authorities, the newspaper reports, on the lowest levels of the pyramid are the gambling addicts, whose money the game organiser uses to pay the winners at the top of the pyramid.

"If the damage caused to those at the bottom of the pyramid far exceed the benefits reaped by random players, something needs to be done", Professor Määttä says.

Helsingin Sanomat claims that some Euro 150 million a year is taken by online poker firms from Finns alone. Measured per head of population, the Finns are fourth in the world tables for spending on gambling generally, and there are estimated to be around 40 000 people in the country with some level of problem arising out of a gambling habit - as many as in The Netherlands, a country with three times the population.

Land gambling in Finland is dominated by Veikkaus, RAY, or Fintoto, but there is currently little if any restriction on people playing on the Internet.

No U.K. Land Casino Plans Says Laddies

Monday, January 21, 2008 mgowanbo.cc

Ladbrokes calls off UK casino plans

Ladbrokes has confirmed that it has shelved plans for land casino activity in the United Kingdom, and will not be bidding for casino licence when the government makes available up to sixteen licenses later this year.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Ladbrokes said: “We have conducted a review of our casino strategy and have decided to withdraw from the process due to the length of time it would take to generate sufficient return on the capital spend required.”

Ladbrokes is a leading British bookmaker with a major presence in Ireland, and the decision is undoubtedly a blow for government plans to issue 16 new casino licensees to local authorities.

James Purnell, the UK's culture minister, is expected to announce in the next few weeks the formal burial of the proposed and highly controversial supercasino that was earmarked for Manchester. He will, however, give the go-ahead for eight large and eight small casinos.

The British government's increase in casino duty in last year's budget, the smoking ban and the removal of lucrative gaming machines, as required under the Gaming Act, have left casino operators nursing damaged businesses.

MFuse Extends Ladbrokes' Mobile Services

2008年2月8日周五 mgowanbo.cc

Advanced WAP technology for UK sportsbook

The British mobile technology company Mfuse has announced that the Deal Or No Deal fixed-odds betting game is now available on the Ladbrokes mobile gambling service.

The game, which Mfuse also plans to roll out to other operators, is identical to the online version, with both a free-play and play-for-cash mode.

Mfuse has additionally launched the second On Handset registration (OHR) solution for Ladbrokes. This works across both Java and WAP, allowing users to register through the handset, without the need to go online. Ladbrokes had earlier tasked Mfuse to update the bookmaker’s WAP offering to bring it in line with its richer Java application.

The innovation means that Ladbrokes can acquire customers through marketing at sporting events, the press and even their retail shops via an SMS short-code or by simply directing customers to the WAP portal.

Ladbrokes re-launched its mobile portal last year in a major push to benefit from the relaxation of rules surrounding advertising gambling in Britain. The bookmaking giant believes that mobile services will be boosted by TV ads because punters will respond to mobile calls to action whilst watching televised matches.

According to Juniper Research predictions late last year, mobile business could be worth $16.6 billion (GBP 8.97 billion) by 2011.

“TV ads for mobile services will make a big difference” Carolina Gasparini, mobile product developer for Ladbrokes said at the time. “The chances of people going to their computer to log on aren’t as good as getting them to respond to an SMS.”

Mfuse, which works on mobile services for Blue Square, Mecca, Paddy Power, Sporting Bet and Victor Chandler agreed that TV ads offer the opportunity to reach a wider audience.

“Previously our clients couldn’t advertise their mobile services. The best medium to be on would be TV,” said Rick Brownlow, director of product development at Mfuse. “Now they have mass market access.”

Two More T.V. Campaigns From Ladbrokes
Friday, March 07, 2008 mgowanbo.cc

Television the media of choice for GBP 4 million new online bingo and casino ad action

Ladbrokes is to embark on a further two TV advertising campaigns in the UK following the success of its first ever television ads in 2007. The first campaign, for Ladbrokes Bingo, will launch this week.

The company's 2007 television campaign helped Ladbrokes achieve strong increases in betting stakes on football - up 25.4 percent since the start of the 2007/8 season. Company spokesmen said the results of the advertising were very positive, achieving strong recall and brand recognition and impacting positively on the perceptions of the Ladbrokes brand.

Spontaneous awareness of the Ladbrokes brand rose to 23 percent after the last campaign, up from 19 percent. Prompted TV awareness of the advertising was measured at 70 percent post campaign compared to an average rating for TV advertising of 55 percent. 91 percent of these people enjoyed the ad and significant gains were also recorded in brand affinity.

Commenting on the advertising plans Chris Bell, Ladbrokes chief executive, said: "The removal of restrictions on TV advertising enables us to compete more effectively with other leisure industries and we were keen to be the first to take advantage of it. Tomorrow we run another campaign for Ladbrokesbingo.com and in April launch our first campaign for ladbrokescasino.com."

Ladbrokes is currently reviewing its plans for further campaigns for betting in 2008.

Ladbrokes is investing GBP 2 million in the campaign for LadbrokesBingo.com which will launch this month, building on last year's campaign that enabled bingo to become the gambling company's fastest growing online product.

The online casino campaign launches in April, with a creative that features three stories where the bizarre behavior of people going to ever more extremes to satisfy their need for excitement lead to comical, yet fatal results. The ads use a documentary style with friends commenting in interviews "if only I had told him in time that I'd found something that could quench his thrill buds for good".

The advertisement is accompanied by a free chip offer, and overall is budgeted at around GBP 2 million.
